The single most important specification on your tech pack is the leather grade. Here’s how the grades differ, and why we build exclusively in full grain buffalo leather.
The grades, decoded
Full grain leather is the top layer of the hide with the grain fully intact — the strongest, most durable cut, and the only grade that develops a true patina. Top grain has the surface lightly sanded and corrected, trading character for uniformity. ‘Genuine leather’, despite the reassuring name, typically refers to lower split layers that are embossed and coated to look like grain — it is the weakest of the three.
Price differences between grades are real but small relative to retail price. The durability difference, however, is dramatic: full grain products routinely outlast corrected-grain equivalents by years, which is why warranty costs and review scores diverge so sharply between brands that specify properly and brands that don’t.
Why we specify full grain buffalo

Buffalo hide has a coarser, tighter fibre matrix than cowhide, giving higher tear resistance at the same thickness. How to verify what you’re buying
Ask your supplier for corner cuts of the actual production hides, not just finished samples. Look at the cross-section: full grain shows a dense, tight fibre structure at the surface. Scratch it — full grain pull-up leathers lighten and can be buffed back with a fingertip. And insist that the grade is written into your purchase order. Reputable manufacturers will welcome it.
